Rabbi Gendra Adult Education Series 5770

[2009-2010]

Temple Beth Shalom

Adult Education Committee

Fall-Winter 2009-2010

As the Obama administration highlights the Middle East conflict, Adult Ed invites you to learn more about Israel and all of our reactions to it. We’ll be presenting an award winning Israeli anti-war movie at a Havdalah event in mid-January. By then, TBS members who’ve taken advantage of the new Adult Ed Hebrew Language series will be able to listen in Hebrew while watching the subtitles. A follow-up event will dissect political trends in Israel today (and their roots), helping you make the most out of the headlines.

Further along in the year, we’ll be offering programs on Islamic view(s) of Jews and Judaism, and a public event examining the resurgence of Anti-Semitism in Europe. Don’t miss these!

Fall-Winter Adult Education Schedule:

Hebrew Pre-Class:  4 Monday sessions:  Oct. 19, Oct. 26, Nov. 2, Nov.  9:  7-8 PM

Have trouble recognizing or sounding out letters? Has the rust accumulated since your bat or bar mitzvah? This short course in Hebrew fundamentals is designed to get you ready for the full course that begins after Thanksgiving—but you can sign up whether or not you plan to continue.

Dr. Sherifa  Zahur, Director of the Institute of Islamic Studies at the U.S. Army War College, will discuss how the principles of Koran can be interpreted to either increase the chances of conflict, or to promote harmony, between Muslims and Jews.  Join us for this informative program open to the public. Light refreshments provided.

Each evening session is comprised of two 45 minutes modules:  Reading-Translation (7-7:45 PM) and Conversation (7:45-8:30 PM). Sign up for one or both! Want to get more out of the siddur?  Reading-Translation builds on your basic knowledge of Hebrew letters and sounds, and focuses on the meaning and connections between Hebrew words.  Thinking of travel to Israel? Basic Conversation classes utilize words learned in the Reading-Translation module, applying them to the modern spoken context.

Havadalah, Pizza, Movie: Saturday, January 16: approximately  5:30-9:00 PM

Join us for a showing and discussion of the award-winning  animated Israeli film Waltz With Bashir, as Israeli veterans try to reconcile their war time experience in Lebanon with the lives they have carved 20 years after. This is possibly the most powerful movie you’ll ever see, a stark, real-life anti-war story grippingly told through animation. A smash hit in Israel and around the world. A must-see movie for adults and serious-minded teens. Child care will be provided.
