From the archives of the 1st Conference in 2006:
Image of the RHR Conference GraphicOver 200 rabbis representing demoninations across the Jewish spectrum are gathering in New York City for the first ever North American rabbinic conference on human rights. The Dec. 10 - 12 conference is sponsored by Rabbis for Human Rights, North America, a sister organization to Rabbis for Human Rights in Israel.
During the conference the government demolished the home of East Jerusalem resident Ahmed Dari, a previously demolished home which had been rebuilt, in part, by a number of the rabbis attending the conference. Stopping home demolitions is one of Rabbis for Human Rights core missions. RHR Israel's Executive Director Rabbi Arik Ascherman protested in front of the Dari home in 1993. Read Ascherman's call-to-action and report on this latest demolition.
Roughly 50 of the 200 rabbis attending the conference were members of the Reconstructionist Rabbinical Association or studying at RRC. At a lunchtime gathering, he RRA rabbis raised $15,000 of the $30,000 needed to rebuild a demolished home.
JRF's Director of Outreach and Tikkun Olam Rabbi Shawn Zevit said, "It made us angry to think that the those who ordered the demolition took advantage of so many RHR rabbis being in New York for the conference. But we rallied together across denominational lines to respond to the situation on the ground."
RRA member Rabbi Brian Walt is the North American Director of Rabbis for Human Rights. Other Reconstructionist rabbis in the leadership of RHR-NA who were present included Sharon Kleinbaum, Mordechai Liebling, Sheila Peltz Weinberg, Sid Schwarz, and Liz Bolton. Students who represent RRC to RHR North America attending the conference were Jara Greenfield and Isabel deKoninck.
