Position Papers

Position Papers are carefully developed guidelines developed to help JRF-affiliated congregations and havurot establish their own policies and practices. Generally these papers are the work of specially formed "Task Forces" which include rabbis, professional staff, and lay members of the Reconstructionist movement.

The Rabbi-Congregation Relationship
A Vision for the 21st Century
Report of the Reconstructionist Commission on the Role of the Rabbi

2001   85 pages softcover
$10/single copy, $5/copy for 2-5, $4/copy for 6 or more

For rabbis and congregations who want healthier, more productive relationships, or for communities undergoing a rabbinic search, this report is an invaluable guide. Ground-breaking perspectives include rethinking the role of the rabbi, lay leaders and other professionals in the synagogue community; a participatory approach to decision-making; support for transitions; and practical information such as how to negotiate a mutually beneficial contract, make the most of your liaison committee, and integrate the rabbi into the life of the congregation. This report is recommended for synagogue boards, rabbi liaison and/or evaluation committees, rabbinic search committees, and all who seek to understand or rethink the rabbi-congregation relationship. An inspiring vision of what our congregations can achieve in this important realm.
