Effective Congregational Leadership: Structures and Roles that Work

Workshop Block:
Block D
Track:
Congregational Leadership

Preparing congregational members for success in current leadership positions and cultivating lay leaders for the future is essential in order for synagogues and havurot to flourish. In addition, lay leaders often play multiple roles – as board members, board officers, members of an executive committee, and chairs of board committees -- each of which is intended to fulfill a specific purpose. It is not uncommon to find leadership development absent and roles and responsibilities that are confused and overlapping. This interactive workshop will focus on the importance of leadership development and clarity about roles. It will address:

*How to structure, document and clarify roles using job descriptions, task descriptions, and mission statements
*How to create a well-functioning congregational leadership development committee that will support current leaders and cultivate leaders for the future, and
*How to identify and deliver the kinds of training that support a congregational governance system and its leaders to function most successfully.

(Note--it will be advantageous for congregations with fulltime rabbis to have the rabbi and at least one lay leader attend together.)
