Oneg Schedule and Services What to Bring
Dear Friends,
As you know, it is our
member participation that helps to make Beth Am unique and dear to us.
Members enrich the celebration of Shabbat by helping to lead Services, by
reading Torah, Haftarah or giving the d’var Torah, by helping to set up the room
or as the Gabbai. Beth Am has also maintained the rich tradition of
members “making” oneg Shabbat - the joy of Shabbat. Many thanks to those who
have agreed to host the oneg Shabbat for the upcoming months. Enclosed is a list
of Shabbat morning dates and oneg hosts, as well as a brief set of instructions
and suggestions.
Many hosts are always needed. If there is a particular
date you would like to host or co-host an oneg Shabbat reception, please call me
as the Oneg Committee chairperson. The Oneg Committee organizes only the oneg
Shabbat receptions.
You will receive a reminder, by telephone or e-mail,
about the your scheduled oneg date. To ensure that I have your correct e-mail,
please send me a message at Kurzban_Ruiz@grandecom.net.
If your plans change and you are unable to host the oneg Shabbat reception
on the scheduled date, please attempt to trade dates with another Beth Am
member, and let me know of any changes made. Please call me (320-9038 or
826-4890) with any questions or problems that may arise. Many thanks for your
participation and support of our Beth Am community.
B’shalom,
Teresa Ruiz,
Chairperson, Oneg Committee
The essence of the oneg is the Kiddush (sanctification) which involves the blessings over the wine and challah. Kosher wine, grape juice, and two challot are used. The two challot represent the double portion of mannah that fell in the desert on Fridays in honor of the Sabbath. Other foods that you want to serve at the morning oneg Shabbat reception are greatly appreciated. Plan for about 15 to 25 adults, and 6 to 8 children at the oneg Shabbat reception. In keeping with Beth Am observance, please bring only pareve and dairy items. Following is a guide:

A kiddush cup, a
challah cover, tray and cutting knife are stored in the Beth Am cabinets, and
are available for your use. Beth Am also keeps in stock paper goods, plastic
utensils, trays, bowls, serving spoons, etc. Please do not hesitate to ask the
Gabbai for guidance in setting up for the reception.
Please come early so that the set up does not disrupt the Service.
